Personally, I’ll forgive you if you haven’t yet heard of Lizard Island, a remote oasis located off the coast of Far North Queensland. In fact, until my recent visit to the far north, I had never even heard of it. Why? Being an Australian, I am sure you are wondering if there is a reasonable excuse.

But the truth is, we have so many amazing islands and resorts within Australia. Some of my favorites include Norfolk Island, Lord Howe Island, and Hamilton Island. But after my most recent visit to Lizard Island, I’m excited to share that I have a new favorite! For those of you intrigued by the island, here is a full review of my stay on the island. I spent three nights and four glorious days on Lizard Island, which I would say is the ideal time to relax and unwind (literally!)
Introducing Lizard Island

When I came across a photo of Lizard Island on Pinterest, I knew I had to go. White sand beaches, sunny skies, swaying palm trees, and endless cocktails. How not drop everything and book a trip!? And by endless cocktails, I really mean endless cocktails. The only resort on Lizard Island is fully inclusive, which means you have plenty of sunsets to look forward to. Plus, there’s an excuse for bottomless avocado on toast, an Australian brunch staple featured on the breakfast menu.
The island is a short one-hour scenic flight from Cairns. Once you arrive at Cairns International Airport, there is a short 5-10 minute drive between this airport and the smaller airport for smaller aircraft (go figure!) Once there, there are multiple flights throughout the day to Lizard Island and back. Inside the small airport, there is wi-fi, a selection of included snacks and non-alcoholic drinks, plus all the usual amenities. So if you have a little time to kill between flights, fear not! The lounge is very comfortable and the staff is more than willing to make you feel at home.

After a short hour-long scenic flight over the Great Barrier Reef, you’ll arrive at beautiful Lizard Island. The island itself is a national park, however, with only one resort here, you’ll revel in the tranquility. Once you land, a team member will be there to greet you and drive you from the airstrip to the lodge in a golf cart. Your bags will magically arrive in your room, while you are offered champagne on arrival and shown around the grounds.

The complex itself is quite large, with 40 rooms in total. Some of these rooms face the beach, while others face the garden or offer sea views without direct access to the beach. Then, of course, there are two oversized luxury villas, which would be a great option if you’re traveling for a special occasion or just looking to splurge.
Inside the Rooms at Lizard Island

For our three-night stay, we checked into an oceanfront suite. These suites are spacious and cozy, however, the big draw here is the beachfront location. You will always be a few steps from the main beach, where you will find a selection of sun loungers for you to get a little closer.

But it’s not just the convenience of the location that makes these rooms the most enviable. You will also enjoy the sun all day from sunrise to sunset, right in front of your villa. Every day is a new sunrise or sunset and the most exciting part of this natural display is that no two days are ever the same.

Inside the room, you’ll find all the usual amenities: a hidden TV, sitting area, desk area, included minibar, luxurious toiletries, and ample closet space. There’s also a spa shop near the reception area in case you’ve forgotten anything, including spa essentials, swimsuits, hats, and sunscreen. The store is quite nice, so be sure to stop by for one of their mornings walks to the restaurant for breakfast.
